Treatment Systems (Southern Ireland) | ||
|
Controlstar Systems have just completed installation and commissioning of three sites on the west coast of Ireland. The Controlstar units are controlling wastewater-processing plants, which are processing the wastewater using the S.B.R. (Sequence Batch Reactor) process. The sites experience a much variation in flow depending on the time of year. These fluctuations in flow are due to the change in population due to visiting tourists, this means that the Controlstar® is programmed with two parameters which are switchable from an input from the IO system. No further programming is necessary due to the flexible function blocks that the system is programmed with. The treated water needs to be of extremely high standard as the surrounding area is picturesque and the local economy is heavily based on tourism, so maintaining the ecology and beauty in the surrounding area is crucial. This high standard of treatment can only be maintained by the use of a high-availability industrial controller, making the Controlstar® the unit of choice. The treatment plants are installed with two batch reactors, in the summer both of the reactors are operated, during the winter months, only one reactor is running. |

The plants are run by the local development agency Údarás na Gaeltachta, and they have full SCADA facilities at there local office. Údarás na Gaeltachta combines an economic development role of creating sustainable jobs and attracting investment to the Gaeltacht regions with community, cultural and language-development activities, working in partnership with local communities and organisations. |

Údarás na Gaeltachta has access to their plants data, at any time, using a dial up connection. The installation engineers have direct access to the plant whilst on site using the Ethernet facilities of the Controlstar, giving them the same view of data and diagnostics as the office system. The process engineers are located 150 miles away in Kilkenny and because of the nature of the terrain, it takes an engineer half a day to travel there. At the office in Kilkenny is another PC running the Controlstar Systems SCADA, which gives them full access to all the historical data that is vital to allow them to analyse the operation and efficiency of the plant. |
